Lecture | From Weapons to Rehabilitation: Basketry in the First World War

Anthropologist Dr Stephanie Bunn and basket maker Tim Palmer will provide a fascinating insight into the role of basketry during the First World War. Not only did baskets have a wide variety of practical uses, from shell cases and hospital cots to aircraft seats, but the very art of basket-making was used in occupational therapy for soldiers recovering from physical and mental trauma.

The Art of War explores the creativity that comes from the personal experiences of warfare. Discover a new perspective of the battlefield through soldiers and their families’ artistic responses to conflict.

Memorial Meadow Service
Sunday 12th November | 11.00am-11.30pm
On Sunday 12th November we will create a memorial meadow in the Castle grounds using the individually woven willow poppies made during our October poppy weaving workshops. This lasting memorial meadow will remember those who have lost their lives through war and conflict.
All ages welcome.

Museum Explorers: Cruel Crimean War
Saturday 18th November | 1.30pm-4.00pm
Join The Black Watch as it fights in the Crimean War. Explore what really happened at the Battles of Alma and Balaclava and make your own cavalry sabre and cannon.

Art of War: Decorative Weapons
Saturday 25th November | 1.30-3.30pm
In this workshop take a close look at some of the wonderfully decorated weapons in the Museum’s collection and have a go at creating some yourself.
