British Army Depot Battalions in 1860s
The Sydney Newspaper "The Empire" of 25 February 1862 has a list of all "Stations of the British Army" with location and depot.
But it also has a list of 23 Depot Battalions, each with number and location.
Out of the total there were 2 in Scotland:
- 22nd Depot Battalion, Stirling
- 23rd Depot Battalion, Aberdeen
I expected that each regiment had its own Depot. But then what was the role of these Depot Battalions and how did they fit in the army structure at the time (1850s/1860s).
Has anyone more information about them?
