The Black Watch, Fighting in the Front Line, 1899-2006
Tuesday 12th September 2017
6:30pm — 8:00pm
Friends of The Black Watch Castle and Museum Lecture Series
Entitled The Black Watch, Fighting in the Front Line 1899-2006, and with a foreword by HRH the Duke of Rothesay, Victoria Schofield will be discussing writing the second and last volume of The Black Watch's official history. She will be highlighting some of the amazing and moving stories which have helped to make the history live through the words of officers and men as revealed in their diaries, letters and memoirs. For this volume she has also been able to include the recollections of over 100 veterans, of whom the oldest was the late Lance Corporal Dave Hutton, who celebrated his 100th birthday in April. In her talk, Schofield will describe the challenges she faced in reducing (for this volume) 107 years of history (1899-2006) into 600 pages and why it is so important for regimental history to be preserved not just in archives but in a readable and accessible form. In addition to having been able to make use of the wealth of information contained in The Black Watch Museum's archives, she will share some of the stories of how other research material came to light, often made available by a chance conversation when a friend would say: 'Oh, I know someone whose grandfather/ father/ uncle was in The Black Watch, “Do you want me to introduce you?”
