    Robert DOWNS, Pte Royal Highlanders

    Larkhall WW1 War Memorial.
    *************************

I'm researching the WW1 names on my local War Memorial.
I'm building the family background (BDM and Census) for each man named, in order to overcome the idea of just a name on a Memorial. For each man found, I post my findings on a Facebook page for Larkhall locals.
I'm at the surnames beginning with 'D' (and have a long way to go).

I have an enquiry regarding ROBERT DOWNS, Pte Royal Highlanders (Black Watch), is who is named on the Memorial (see attached) but I cannot find him on the CWGC, SNWM, etc.

I did find ROBERT DOWNS, Sgt 1669, 5th Bn H.L.I., DoW 15 November, 1915, at Gallipoli.
SDGW shows that this Sgt ROBERT DOWNS was born and enlisted in Glasgow.
I'm sure that this is not the same man.

I have searched the Ancestry Military Records but still nothing (no MIC or anything else).

I wondered if the gurus here would point me in the right direction, at least in a different one.

    Kindest Regards,

    Hi Tom,

Are you the same Tom that is on the SMRG?

If could be that the dreaded spelling error has been made:

    Rank: Private
    Service No: S/24427
    Date of Death: 24/07/1918
Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 7th Bn
    Panel Reference:
    Memorial: SOISSONS MEMORIAL

He is listed in Wauchope's Vol 2 7th Battalion.

Links: The SNWM give you a bit more information.

I've searched The British Newspapers Archive, but I was looking for 'Downs', so I'll try the 'correct' spelling of 'Downes'.

With Chalky's help I've now got the right man.
I was able to find the panel on Soissons Memorial and the Panel List on the CWGC:
    Downes Robert - Pte S_24427 - 7th Black Watch - CWGC Panel at Soissons Memorial.jpgDownes Robert - Pte S_24427 - 7th Black Watch - CWGC Panel List p1.jpg

I tried 'Downes' on the British Newspaper Archive but no joy.
Thanks to both of you for your help.

    Joe,

According to the SNWM Robert was born in Dalserf Lanarkshire.

The only Robert Downs I could find born in Dalserf was in 1852. This would have made him 66 at the time of his death.
