Explore all the fun to be found in the Education Room at Balhousie Castle. Drop in on one of our craft afternoons to try your hand at different crafts and activities!

Grandparents go free to the Museum
Calling all grandparents; visit the Castle and Museum with your grandchildren on 3rd July and you will be given a free entry into the Museum. There is no age limit on your grandchild.

Visit on Tuesday mornings during the summer holidays and find our activity station to get hands-on with objects or try out a special craft.

Lecture | The Black Watch in the Second World War
By Black Watch Museum archivist Richard Mckenzie

Archivist Richard Mckenzie will give an overview of the role of The Black Watch in the Second World War, from the first year and eventual surrender of the 51st Highland Division in 1940 through to the Regiment’s service in the Mediterranean, covering the 2nd Battalion’s time with the Chindits in the Far East to the final offensives against the Germans in 1944-45.

Take this unique opportunity to enjoy a three-course whisky pairing dinner, preceded by a drinks and canapés reception and a highlight tour of The Black Watch Museum led by our Curator, Emma Halford-Forbes. Savour a menu developed by our Head Chef, Alec Summers, to complement the whiskies which will be served to accompany each course.

Lecture | The 1715 Jacobite Rising and the Battle of Sheriffmuir

Ruari Halford-MacLeod will talk about the Jacobite Rising of 1715; the decisive Battle of Sheriffmuir took place on 13th November 1715 - three hundred years ago. The Jacobites’ captured Perth and made it their headquarters throughout 1715. This lecture takes place on the exact day, three hundred years later, that the Earl of Mar, leader of the Jacobite’s, came to Perth and stayed with the Earl of Kinnoull at Balhousie Castle.

The Black Watch recruited from all over Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perthshire and many families in the Regimental area have connections to the Regiment. If you think your family might have a Black Watch connection, or if you have an interest in archive research, come along to this event led by the Black Watch archivists and learn how to use our resources to discover your family history.

Lecture | The Battle of Loos
By Lt Col (Retd) Willie Coupar

This address will seek to explain why Loos was described as "The Unwanted Battle" and will focus on: the terrain; global events; interesting personalities who took part, one being the speaker's uncle; the role of Douglas Haig and the rapid expansion of the BEF. Much of the emphasis will be on the two Scottish Kitchener divisions which distinguished themselves in the main assault in the early part of the battle and on the failure of the Reserve.

The Black Watch Castle and Museum Summer Festival

All children must be accompanied by an adult
Join in the fun at The Black Watch Castle & Museum’s first annual summer festival. The day’s events will include: face painting, crafts, dressing up, a treasure hunt, decorating shortbread soldiers, reenactors, in-gallery handling and tours. Enjoy a variety of demonstrations from cookery to chocolate, indulge in the BBQ and treat the ears to Pipe Music and the well-known Folk Duo band, Mad Ferret.

Loos Memorial Service
Memorial service held in the ground of the Balhousie Castle to remember more than 500 Black Watch men who fell 100 years before at the Battle of Loos. Members of the public and family of the fallen are welcome to attend.
