Canadian WW1 CEF Badges of the Black Watch

The following are photos of Black Watch badges from my CEF collection. Starting below with the 42nd Battalion brass OR's Glengarry. The pattern is the same as the British/Imperial Glengarry but differs in the use of brass instead of white metal. These are often sold as British 1916 "economy" badges but I understand that is not correct and that no British BW economy badge was issued. Note LACESSIT spelling.

CEF 42nd Bn Black Watch Officer's Badge

Here is a very scarce officer's badge to the CEF 42nd Battalion. Heavy cast silver with gilt overlay. Marked MacDougall's London.

CEF 73rd Bn Black Watch OR's Badge

Here is a scarce 73rd Bn OR's cap badge by Tiptaft. Tiptaft of Birmingham made a lot of CEF badges. They are usually distinguished by the long "feet" on the lugs. This cap badge has a light coppery coating, showing wear to high points, that is unusual to see on CEF badges. Most CEF badges have a green 'pickled' finish or a brown enamel finish. I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has any photographic evidence of this badge being worn as there is some uncertainty among CEF collectors as to whether this badge was ever in general use.

CEF 73rd Bn Black Watch OR's Collar Badge

Here are the matching collars to the 73rd maple leaf pattern cap badge. Unlike the cap badge, there is photographic evidence that these collars were in use from early in the war.

    Glengarry Pattern Variation

I have this badge with the rest of my 73rd Bn badges, but I am not sure if there was a real distinction between the 42nd and 73rd Bn Glengarries. This one has the spelling LACESSET. It also has flat-stamped copper lugs which were common on Canadian badges of the time.
