    Unsigned letter in the hand of General Sir Archibald Alison, politely refusing a dinner invitation dated 1888. Along with a small clipped page removed from a book.
    Commissioned into the 72nd in 1846 served at the siege of Savastopol in 1855. Secetary to Sir Colin Cambell duting the Indian Mutiny losing an arm at the relief of Lucknow.
    In 1873 he was in command of the British brigade during the Ashanti war and fought at the Battle of Amoaful. He commanded the Highland Brigade during the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882, G.O.C. British Troops in Egypt 1883. Then G.O.C. Aldershot District untill his death in 1907.

    The piper is wearing a Kings Crown pre 1952 baldric badge, and a chrome plated brooch with silver plated centre.
    Cant make out the crown on the bonnet badge as it is covered by button holding the hackle.

    There are 20 BW Territorial offs, 6 Transvaal Scottish offs and a Captain of a Territorial Bn of the HLI.
    Can anyone suggest a name for the Lt/Col in the centre?

    Some are men identified on the reverse.
    Front row second from left Wadham, front row second from right Patsie Lockett.
    Middle row first on left 3 Jones, next man missing Tom Merrett, Will Merret, missing, Arthur Lindsay, missing.

    Oak statue by Pilkinton Jackson displayed in the SUSM Edinburgh Castle 1920s.
    He was the supervising sculptor for the Scottish National War Memorial.
