    Hi Ron,

I notice that on some of the older badges there is a difference in the spelling of the motto.

This one is Lacesset while others are Lacessit.

Could you put a date on the change of spelling or is it just random?

I like this badge and have pinched it.

Hi Chalky, the Regiment never could make up its mind about the spelling, ET or IT was used up untill the 1930s therafter they settled on IT. But there are always exceptions to the rule.

Royal Highlanders sealed pattern shoulder title dated 1927. The curved Black Watch title was worn 1921-1927, when it was replaced by BW.
So this piece is an anomaly?

    Hi Ron,

Thanks for the et or it, perhaps your puzzle is as bad as mine.

    Ron,

You had asked in my thread on the BW officer's uniform if I could post some badge photos from my collection.

The first shows two Sphinx badges. Both are gilted and die struck.

The one on top is on the feather bonnet of Maj Gen Tom Rennie circa 1930s.

The one below was said to have been taken off a disintegrating feather bonnet from the 1860s. Notice the unusual pattern of vertical striations on the headdress. The only other place I have seen this pattern is in Bloomer's "Badges of the Highland and Lowland Regiments" page 86; this references a silvered 92nd officer's feather bonnet badge worn pre-1881.

    Regards,
    Mike
