    Boer War period cane top.
Looks like a home made item, WM Victorian crown button fixed to a sleeve mounted with a P1897 collar badge.
    Heavy service wear evident.

Assuming that the inscriptions are indeed the wearer's service number and assuming that the service number begins with one of the digits at the top of the badge, there are four possible combinations by moving counter-clockwise or clockwise around the badge: 6348, 6843, 8436, or 8634. Using the data from Army Service Numbers 1881-1914, the join dates for each of those numbers would be:

    6348 - early 1896
    6843 - late 1897
    8436 - late 1901
    8634 - early 1902

Each of these numbers makes sense for a badge with a Victorian Crown. VC badges from existing stocks continued to be issued even after the death of the Queen.

Thanks Mike. That makes sense. Well, at least we can narrow it down to 4 likely candidates!

If it were me I would be inclined to go one of two ways. Clockwise from top left making it 6843 or top left, right - bottom left, right making it 6834

Seems logical. Sadly, we’ll never be sure. Has anyone encountered a badge numbered in this manner??
